Renting a car in Abidjan: the practical guide
For a business trip or a family stay, renting a car in Abidjan offers real freedom. Here is what to know before you take the wheel.

With or without a driver?
For a first visit, a car with a driver is often the best choice: they know the city and handle the traffic and parking. Regular visitors can opt for a standard rental.
Licence and documents
- A valid national licence, and an international permit is recommended.
- Passport and, depending on the rental firm, a payment card for the deposit.
- Check the minimum age (often 23) and how long you've held your licence.
Traffic and driving
Abidjan traffic is heavy at peak hours, especially on the bridges linking Plateau, Cocody and Marcory. Allow buffers and avoid driving at night off the main roads.
Insurance
Take full (comprehensive) cover with a reasonable excess. We check the terms for you before booking.
Airport transfers
A vehicle can wait for you at Félix-Houphouët-Boigny airport, with no haggling or waiting on arrival.
